People who have used the same phrase, as cited in just this one CNN.com article:
- In Iowa last October, McCain drew comparisons between Hillary Clinton's current health care plan and the one she championed in 1993: "I think they put some lipstick on the pig, but it's still a pig." McCain used roughly the same line in May, after claiming the Republican nomination.
- "I think that both Gen. Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker are capable people who have been given an impossible assignment. George Bush has given a mission to Gen. Petraeus, and he has done his best to try to figure out how to put lipstick on a pig." - Obama
- Torie Clarke, a former McCain adviser, wrote a book called, "Lipstick on a Pig: Winning In the No-Spin Era by Someone Who Knows the Game."
- Other politicians who have used the phrase in recent years: Dick Cheney, Sen. Maria Cantwell of Washington, Sen. James Inhofe of Oklahoma, Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Rep. John Mica of Florida and Rep. Tom Tancredo of Colorado.
- John McCain's daughter Meghan ... point[ed] out Wednesday morning that the GOP presidential nominee has been known to use the phrase. "I've heard my dad say that, the term 'lipstick on a pig,'" McCain said during an appearance on Fox promoting her new children's book about her father.
The McCain campaign is demanding an apology for Gov. Palin. How chivalrous.
...Weak. So weak.

I think it sucks that they're drawing this out and demanding an apology. You're totally right -- McCain himself has used this phrase in talking about Hillary Clinton. Plus, the Obama quotation is taken out of context -- he was referring to the policies that the McCain-Palin ticket endorses as they simultaneously proclaim that they will be agents of change come January.
But...I don't know that that takes anything away from the fact that the lipstick thing is still kind of sexist. Why can't the candidates, for example, say something like "You can put Old Spice on it, but..." or, "You can give it an ascot, but...?"
In the grand scheme of things, it's frustrating to watch this race come down to idiotic shit (have you seen the McCain ad about Obama voting to teach kindergartners comprehensive sexual health? -- it's pretty despicable). But for some reason, that idiotic shit works.
Haha, Olivia, you are so right and amazing.
How bout "You can put Axe body spray on a pig..."
Also your serious comments are also true.
I sure hope nobody is taking this seriously. Except for aaaallll the stupid news people making this a huge story to fill space and to fill empty heads with something. Oh, and people that just want to argue against Obama for any petty reason. I sure do wish Hillary would turn around and jab back by calling them/Palin, whiners. Ha ha! Palin had the nerve to comment on Hillary under pressure, and now she can't take a few weeks of heat! Talk about weak. LMAO as I type this there is the Conan skit bustin' on their (McCain/Palin) absurd manipulative attempts to distort things.
Gotta love that double standard too. It's ok for John to say it? It's not some new saying either. (sigh)
PS cupcake, I'm so glad to have found you through cnn. I get such a kick out of your writing style.
