Worried that welfare costs are rising as the number of taxpayers declines, state Rep. John LaBruzzo, R-Metairie, said Tuesday he is studying a plan to pay poor women $1,000 to have their Fallopian tubes tied.OH YEAH, IT'S TOTALLY VOLUNTARY to pay poor women $1,000 a pop for a tubal ligation. Never mind that it would take a woman earning the federal minimum wage just under 4 weeks of full time work to make $1,000 on her own. (I did the math.) NO OUTSIZED INCENTIVES THERE.
[...] “What I’m really studying is any and all possibilities that we can reduce the number of people that are going from generational welfare to generational welfare, ” he said.
He said his program would be voluntary. It could involve tubal ligation, encouraging other forms of birth control or, to avoid charges of gender discrimination, vasectomies for men.
Oh and then this:
It also could include tax incentives for college-educated, higher-income people to have more children, he said.Is this man familiar at all with the concept of eugenics? Has he ever even heard the word, and all the filthy, awful things it conjures up in the minds of any half-sensible American, or does he think he just came up with this genius new concept on his own?
PS. Here's the actual story from the Times-Picayune.

Is Medicare going to pay for the procedures? Or are the would-be mothers expected to use their $1000 to pay for it?
It's amazing how sterilization becomes the answer and not easier access to contraceptives.
wow, doctors won't even let me have that procedure despite the fact that i want it.
i can barely even get through the rage this article inspires...
Why is it that relatively professional, educated people think it's ok to say things like this? It's even worse when they've studied them for weeks and it's not just a classist, racist, sexist comment said in a moment of thoughtlessness.
This reminds me of when William Bennet (former secretary of education and authority on values
!) said aborting black babies would reduce crime (btw it isn't true).
Anyway, I get angry all over again.
